In an unexpected turn of events in Fakirpur village under Anandapur block of Keonjhar district, a tale of robbery led to the arrest of an alleged victim woman’s son, on Sunday.

Initially, the woman identified as Pushpabati Nath had reported to the police that her home was looted by some masked intruders who had stolen over forty grams of gold jewellery.

The plot unravelled when further police investigations revealed that Pushpabati's son Rajendra Nath was actually the one behind the theft. It was uncovered that Rajendra had taken the gold ornaments to finance his online gaming pursuits.

To avoid her husband’s anger, Pushpabati fabricated the story of a robbery to cover up the act and in support of her son.

The woman's fabricated loot story

“Four miscreants came to our house and asked me whether Prafulla Babu (the woman’s husband) was at home or not. I said that he was in his school. When I entered my house, one of them followed me and held me at gunpoint. He threatened me with dire consequences, in case I refused to hand over the almirah key,” Pushpabati had said.

“After I handed over the key, they looted the gold jewellery and decamped with them,” the woman had previously stated to mediapersons.

She had even lodged an FIR with Anandapur police detailing that four masked individuals looted the gold from her almirah. However, as the investigation proceeded, the truth came to light, resulting in Rajendra’s arrest.

“Some of the recovered gold jewellery were previously mortgaged by Rajendra Nath for money. We have recovered a gold chain and two rings from his (Rajendra’s) possession. A Mangalsutra and an earring have also been recovered from a moneylender identified as Sadashiv Sahoo,” Anandapur SDPO, Prasanta Behera said.
