Athagarh area under Cuttack district in Odisha is witnessing the vibrant hues of Thai orchids, thanks to the pioneering efforts of a woman farmer, Sambita Bose. 

This unique agricultural enterprise, imported and cultivated locally, is rapidly gaining interest among residents of the area.

Cultivating Success in Athagarh

As per reports, Sambita has transformed Khamar Nuagaon village into a botanical paradise, replicating the stunning landscapes of Thailand. Utilising advanced horticultural techniques, she grows orchids using coconut husks, a resourceful approach promoting eco-friendly agriculture. 

Her farm serves as a testament to innovation and the use of natural supports, enhancing the visual and aromatic beauty of the landscape. 

Economic Empowerment & Community Impact

Sambita's venture is not just about personal success. Her efforts have reportedly provided numerous employment opportunities, aligning with broader economic goals for regional development.

This initiative, supported by Odisha Mukhyamantri Krushi Udyog Yojana (MKUY), demonstrates the transformative power of effective resource utilisation. With 43,000 orchid plants flourishing on her one-acre farm, Sambita showcases how passion can lead to profitable and sustainable ventures.

"I started the project under Odisha Mukhyamantri Krushi Udyog Yojana (MKUY). I am doing the cultivation in 1.3 acres of land. I am making good profit by selling the flowers in local market," said Sambita.

"I am so happy that the orchid cultivation has created employment opportunities for us," said Birakishore Rout, a worker.

Inspiring Future Farmers

The process of importing orchids from Thailand is complemented by innovative methods like fibre staking and precise fertilisation. These meticulous practices yield a monthly profit of Rs 2 lakh after accounting for costs. 

Orchids from Athagarh are now reaching markets beyond the state, elevating the local brand. As her success story spreads, it is inspiring others in the community to explore this promising field.

"Thai orchids are very beautiful and have huge demand in the local market and outside the state. We have got inspired by Sambita's venture. We will start orchid cultivation soon," said a local resident.
