Uttar Pradesh man falls victim to maritime job fraud in Odisha, stranded

A man from Uttar Pradesh, Prem Kumar Ram, has allegedly become the target of an elaborate job fraud, leaving him stranded in Paradip of Jagatsinghpur district, Odisha, without money or vital documents, police sources said on Friday.

According to the sources, Ram was lured by the promise of employment on a ship but soon found himself deceived by an alleged fraudster who vanished with Rs 50,000, his passport, Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC), and health certificate.

With no means to cover his hotel expenses and uncertain about his journey home, Ram turned to Paradip Police. He reported that the suspect, identified as Ankit Kumar, had assured him of job openings and persuaded him to travel to Paradip. Before disappearing, the suspect extracted money from Ram via phone transactions.

After the incident, Ram was unable to reach Ankit Kumar, whose phone is switched off. The police are now his only hope for recovering his lost documents and money.

The case highlights the far-reaching impact of such fraudulent activities, underscoring the vulnerability of job seekers in India.

“An agent asked me to come to Paradip for employment. I am a cook by profession. He took my passport, CDC and money. After March 11, he is not receiving my phone call and has gone incommunicado,” the victim man said to mediapersons.
