Timber shortage hits chariot construction work ahead of Puri Rath Yatra

Construction work of the three chariots of the Holy Trinity-Lord Jagannath and His siblings Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra has been affected due to a shortage of timber ahead of the world famous Rath Yatra in Puri.

Shortage of essential timbers

As per reports, the ongoing traditional construction of the three monumental chariots has been delayed due to a lack of required materials, specifically the 40-foot 'Dhaura' wood essential for the central axle of each chariot, a fundamental component in their assembly.

Additionally, the input of 'Sahaja' and 'Asan' timbers are in short supply. These timbers are needed to create as many as 27 'dandas', or structural rods, across the three chariots, further stalling the progress.

Furthermore, senior supervisors have acknowledged these setbacks, highlighting the scarcity of wood as a significant hindrance.

They have reportedly communicated these issues to the Nayagarh Forest Department authorities with the hope of expedited resolution.

"Central axles are the main components of the chariots. Dhaura timbers are essential for the construction of the axles. However, the required Dhaura woods are yet to arrive, and as a result, the construction work has been affected," said the chief Biswakarma of Nandighosha chariot.

"Danda works of the chariots have also been affected due to the short supply of Sahaja and Asan timbers. The weather has been very conducive to undertaking these crucial construction works. However, we have been handicapped due to the shortage of the required wood. Hopefully, the timbers will arrive tomorrow and the construction work of the chariots will be expedited," he added.
