Bhubaneswar metro rail project: High-level meet headed by Odisha CM soon to make project viable

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Odisha CM Mohan Majhi will soon chair a crucial meeting to advance the state’s metro rail project. Focus areas include feasibility, long-term benefits, and socio-economic impacts. This marks the third high-level discussion on Bhubaneswar and Cuttack's transport issues.

Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project

The much-anticipated metro rail project in Odisha is set to take a major step forward, as the Odisha government is gearing up to convene a high-level meeting under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Mohan Majhi. Sources from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed that the meeting will take place very soon and will focus on critical aspects of the metro project, including its feasibility, long-term utility, and public benefits.

This upcoming session will mark the third high-level discussion on the metro proposal,l chaired by the Chief Minister himself. In the previous two meetings, key stakeholders and departmental heads discussed the preliminary framework and strategic significance of introducing a metro network in the state, particularly focusing on Bhubaneswar and Cuttack—two cities struggling with increasing urban traffic congestion.

According to officials, the primary agenda of the forthcoming meeting will be to examine how the metro system can become a viable, sustainable, and accessible mode of public transport for the people of Odisha. The deliberations will also explore the socio-economic impact of the metro on urban development, commuting efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

DPR After Meeting

Following the meeting, work on the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will begin. The DPR will include technical specifications, route planning, funding models, environmental assessments, and timelines for execution. It is expected to be a comprehensive document that will serve as the foundation for the state’s most ambitious urban transport project to date, informed Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Saturday.

The metro project, if realized, is poised to transform public transportation in Odisha by offering faster, cleaner, and more reliable travel options. Citizens and urban planners alike are hopeful that the government’s proactive approach will pave the way for modern infrastructure development, catering to the needs of a rapidly expanding urban population.

With the Chief Minister taking a direct interest and leading the efforts, expectations are high that the dream of a metro system in Odisha might soon become a reality.

A meeting headed by Odisha Chief Minister will be held shortly on the metro rail project so that it is viable and helpful for the people. A final decision will be made after the meeting.

It appears that the metro railway project from Trishulia and Bhubaneswar is not viable. Hence, the meeting has been convened to review the project. Already meeting has already been held twice in the past, the minister added.
