Trial run to begin with 3 buses in Bhubaneswar

In a major step toward green and sustainable public transport, the Odisha government is all set to introduce hydrogen-powered buses in Odisha. The initiative, which aligns with the national vision of promoting clean energy, has taken a significant leap with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and a leading clean energy company.

According to official sources, the initial rollout will take place in Bhubaneswar, where the first fleet of three hydrogen buses will begin operations on a trial basis. These buses will serve as a pilot project to assess the feasibility, efficiency, and public reception of hydrogen-fueled transport in the state’s capital city of Bhubaneswar.

To support this eco-friendly initiative, a dedicated depot will be established specifically for the maintenance and operation of hydrogen buses. This depot will be equipped with all necessary infrastructure, including refueling stations and maintenance facilities tailored for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Saturday informed that already MoU has already been signed. Three buses will ply in Bhubaneswar in the first phase, and a special depot will be built. Later, it will be extended to other parts of the state.

A senior transport department official stated that the project aims not only to reduce the carbon footprint but also to pave the way for the future of public transportation in Odisha. Depending on the outcome of the trial phase, the government will evaluate and finalize plans to expand the hydrogen bus service to other major cities and towns across the state.

The introduction of hydrogen buses is expected to revolutionize urban mobility in Odisha by offering a cleaner, quieter, and more energy-efficient alternative to conventional diesel and petrol buses. It will also contribute significantly to the state’s environmental goals and demonstrate Odisha’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge green technology.

As preparations for the trial run near completion, the people of Bhubaneswar await the arrival of these futuristic buses that could redefine the way Odisha travels.
