Sambalpur police launches 'Operation Dark Night' to curb crimes during festive season
In a unique measure ahead of the festive season, Sambalpur Police have intensified surveillance under ‘Operation Dark Night’. Moving beyond routine highway and main-road patrolling, the force is now focusing on narrow lanes, secluded areas and poorly lit corners of the city, where criminals often take advantage of darkness to carry out illegal activities.
Officials are closely observing individuals lingering in dark alleys and stopping suspicious persons and vehicles for questioning.
The move comes as police anticipate a rise in criminal activities during Durga Puja and other festivals, when miscreants attempt house break-ins, chain snatching and smuggling of narcotics.
Chain snatchers, in particular, are known to exploit large festive gatherings, blending into crowds after committing thefts. By expanding patrols to residential areas and inner streets, police aim to prevent such crimes and reassure citizens of their safety.
The intensified patrolling is not only aimed at deterring criminals but also at instilling confidence among residents. Police have appealed to citizens to cooperate and promptly report any suspicious movements. The presence of uniformed personnel in inner lanes is intended to send a clear message that no corner of the city is beyond the reach of law enforcement.
Although no arrests have been reported so far under the operation, officials believe the initiative has already served as a warning to potential offenders.
By extending their vigilance beyond the main roads, Sambalpur Police hope to spark fear among criminals and provide a stronger sense of security to the public during the festive period.
