Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar
After Customs officials seized cannabis (Ganja) worth Rs 9 Cr in an operation at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar, it has come to the fore that an international gang is behind the racket of smuggling the contraband through the airport.
Early findings suggest that the narcotics were processed in Germany before being smuggled into India via Malaysia, informed sources. It is suspected that a large international smuggling syndicate is involved in the operation.
Two women, identified as Nasira Begum and Abida Khatun from West Bengal have been detained and will be interrogated by the Narcotics Department.
Meanwhile, today’s hearing of the smuggling case has been postponed till January 16, due to an incomplete submission of essential documents.
Advocate Subhrajit Mohanty argued there is no hard evidence linking the seized marijuana to the women in custody, noting the narcotics were found in two separate luggage bags.
“Two accused women were forwarded to the court on January 6 and the hearing was earlier fixed for today. However, the next date of hearing has been scheduled for January 16,” the lawyer expressed.
The huge cache of contraband was seized following a tip-off to the Customs Department.
