Rising water level in Baitarani river triggers danger signal; Bhadrak district on high alert

Continuous rainfall due to a low-pressure system has led to a significant rise in the river water levels across Odisha. In Bhadrak district, the Baitarani River has touched the danger mark at Akhuapada anicut. As of 2 PM, the water level was reportedly flowing exactly at the danger mark of 18.33 meters.

Bhadrak Collector Dilip Routray stated that a major flood could occur in the Baitarani River basin. The district administration is on high alert and fully prepared to tackle any emergency situation arising out of the flood. As per sources, Dhamnagar and Bhandaripokhari blocks are likely to be the most affected areas.

To ensure prompt action, two nodal officers have been deployed in the vulnerable regions. Residents in potentially affected areas are being warned, and instructions have been given to keep all schools open for emergency use if required. Additionally, ODRAF (Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force) teams are on standby for deployment if the situation worsens.

As per sources, there is a high flood risk in Chandbali, Dhamnagar, and Bhandaripokhari blocks as water levels continue to rise. 

"We expect moderate to intense floods in the Baitarani river basin. We are making people alert about the flood, especially in two blocks- Bhandaripokhari and Dhamnagar. We will make people aware of the flood through mike announcements in the likely affected panchayats. They will be evacuated to flood and cyclone shelter centres. Considering the current flood situation, ODRAF teams will be deployed. We are hopeful that we will be able to manage the expected flood situation," said Bhadrak Collector Dilip Routray.
