Heavy rainfall wreaks havoc in Mayurbhanj, several houses collapse

Continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours has caused widespread damage in various parts of the Mayurbhanj district, with the worst-hit being Mallarpada village under Badagaon panchayat in Karanjia block.

Due to incessant rains, the houses of two residents, Biranchi Naik and Mohan Mahakud, collapsed, resulting in significant property damage. The impact of the collapse was such that walls fell on their livestock, leading to the death of goats and poultry. Locals said the structures could not withstand the intense rain spells and gave way late at night.

Officials confirmed that Similipal Wildlife Sanctuary’s Kapatghai area recorded the highest rainfall in the district at 139 mm, highlighting the severity of the monsoon activity.

Meanwhile, the affected families are demanding immediate compensation and rehabilitation support. The villagers also urged authorities to take preventive measures in vulnerable zones to avoid similar incidents during future rainfalls.

Notably, as many as 43 blocks across 15 districts have received over 50 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours, leading to increased river inflows.

Meanwhile, the Special Relief Commissioner has issued instructions to District Collectors in areas likely to be affected by heavy rainfall, urging them to remain on high alert.
