Police mitra hacked to death on busy road in Bhubaneswar; crime scene recreated

In a startling revelation, police investigation revealed that the youth who was brutally murdered by decapitation in Bhubaneswar yesterday was a police mitra.

Preliminary reports had suggested that the deceased, identified as Sahadev Nayak, was killed after being hacked by assailants owing to previous enmity. Subsequently, police arrested three people, including a woman, from the Kedarpalli area of Bhubaneswar yesterday afternoon and began a thorough probe.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused had discarded the weapon, a machete, used in the murder near the crime site.

Police on Thursday conducted a crime scene recreation in an area beside the Daya River Bridge close to Dhauli and also carried out an on-site investigation. As of now, the motive behind the crime is stated to be past enmity.

On the early morning of January 8, the decapitated body of Nayak was found on the Rasulgarh-Vani Vihar overbridge. Early reports had stated that the youth was chased by at least four people, while on his motorcycle, on the national highway at around 8:30 am yesterday. The assailants reportedly severed his head off his body before fleeing the spot.

The gruesome scenario had unfolded on the very day that the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas kicked off in Bhubaneswar. Moreover, a heavy security blanket was also in place at major stretches and junctions of the state capital at the time of the murder.

The brazen act of heinousness had led police to take serious cognizance of the offence, and Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Pinak Mishra, also assured swift action.
