The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday directed the Trial Court to complete the hearing of the trial of the infamous Patnagarh parcel bomb case in Bolangir

The Apex Court has instructed that the proceedings be wrapped up within a month, after reviewing a bail application from the accused, Punjilal Meher.

The High Court had previously set a deadline to ensure the case’s expedited resolution.

To date, statements from 60 witnesses have been recorded, with testimonies from two remaining witnesses awaited. The incident, which occurred on February 23, 2018 in Patnagarh, tragically resulted in the death of two individuals. Punjilal Meher has remained in judicial custody since the attack.

The case garnered significant attention due to the unusual nature of the attack—a parcel bomb sent through the post, leading to loss of life and widespread fear. The judicial focus now rests on ensuring a thorough yet expedited resolution.

With the Supreme Court’s directive in place, it is anticipated that the Trial Court will adhere to the timeline, balancing the need for both swiftness and justice.

“Statements of maximum witnesses have been recorded. Statements of only two witnesses are yet to be recorded. Under the circumstance, while reviewing a bail application from the accused, Punjilal Meher, Honourable Supreme Court has given an important directive. The Court has given four weeks of time to record the Statement of the remaining two witnesses. Punjilal Meher has been ordered to fully cooperate in the trial process,” said government lawyer Ashis Chandan.
