The heart of the contention lay in the establishment of the newly proposed standing committee, a body intended to play a significant role in municipal governance. The specifics of the committee’s remit and responsibilities were left unsettled, contributing to the unrest among the elected representatives.

As per reports, some Corporators locked the main gate of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation and staged a protest. They alleged that the Mayor and Commissioner didn’t pay heed to their grievances and left the session midway.

“The Mayor and Commissioner are indulged in various corruption activities. When questions are being asked to them about it, they are trying to suspend the meeting. People have voted for us to solve their issues. If we will not be able to do it, why will we come here?” asked a protesting Corporator.
