Odisha govt ropes in IIT Madras to decongest Bhubaneswar Jayadev Vihar traffic amid flyover plans

In a movie aimed at streamlining long lines of traffic in Bhubaneswar, the Odisha government has partnered with IIT Madras for a scientific study aimed at optimizing vehicle flow at the Jayadev Vihar Square intersection.

According to The Times of India, the move was initiated after a proposal by the Commissionerate Police to address congestion caused by issues such as poor lane discipline, mixed traffic types and blocked junctions.

Jayadev Vihar Traffic Study:

According to reports, IIT Madras, serving as the state’s road safety consultant, will conduct a pilot analysis at Jayadev Vihar Chhak and its adjoining flyover area. The study will assess peak-hour delays, pedestrian movement, and vehicle patterns to propose efficiency upgrades, including reduced waiting times.

Elevated Corridor to Ease Gridlock:

The plans for a detailed study of the traffic come after the state recently green-lighting plans for an elevated corridor along the Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan stretch.

On February 11, Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan stated in an interaction with the media that ‘large partitions of the corridor are scheduled for completion by 2027-28’. Additionally, the 4-lane flyover will feature strategic exits for seamless transitions between service roads and the overhead lane.

The new flyover will connect to the existing NH-16 overpass without demolishing it, ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow from Jayadev Vihar to Nandankanan. As such, key junctions like Damana Square and Patia Chhak, which currently face severe bottlenecks, will benefit from improved road access beneath the elevated structure.
