Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) cameras will soon be installed in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to enhance security measures against crime, criminals and traffic violations. This was announced by Twin City Police Commissioner S Debadatta Singh on Monday. Alongside the installation of AI cameras, plans include expanding closed-circuit television (CCTV) coverage and increasing the number of security personnel. These efforts aim to provide the community with thorough surveillance, thereby enhancing security and boosting residents' peace of mind.
According to the Police Commissioner, Bhubaneswar is a smart city and already 1000 CCTV cameras have been installed at several prominent junctions. Such cameras at present are inadequate in view of population rise and other aspects.
“The AI-enabled cameras will be equipped with facial recognition so that culprits can be clearly identified and the entire analysis will be AI-enabled. This will bring in more efficiency in the delivery of services, maintaining law and order and other security measures by the Commissionerate Police,” said the Police Commissioner.
Sources said that the location for the installation of AI cameras has been identified as per an exercise undertaken by respective police stations by taking into account shadow areas, from traffic point of view and on the basis of suggestions from civil society and others.
The Commissionerate Police has detected several burglaries and other cases. Such cases had been learning lessions for the Commissionerate Police and highlighted the need for installation of more CCTV cameras, which is possible through public partnership as well, he said.
“We had earlier requested apartments to install CCTV cameras. Several have installed, but some cameras are not in working condition. It is the responsibility of the apartment societies to ensure that all the security mechanisms are in working conditions,” the Police Commissioner added.
