A newborn girl, suspected to have been dumped by her mother, got a new lease of life, thanks to a group of slum dwellers who showed humanity and rescued the baby. The slum dwellers found the baby girl lying unattended at around 2am Friday night and immediately rescued and provided with proper care, before informing the police in the morning.

According to sources, the incident has been reported from a slum near Regional Transport Office (RTO)-1 near Acharya Vihar, Bhubaneswar.

“Someone has left the baby here at around 2am at night. I woke up at around 3-3:30 to attend nature’s call when I heard the baby crying in the chilling cold. So, I rescued the baby and immediately cleaned and wrapped her in warm clothes to provide warmth because she was shivering in the cold. It is a newborn, even its umbilical cord has not fallen,” an eye-witness said.

Similarly, another eye-witness said, “It was around 3am at night. The baby girl was crying, we woke up after the dog started barking. They had fled after putting the baby on a towel.”

Shaheed Nagar police arrived at the scene and ensured the baby’s safety. She was subsequently admitted to a nearby hospital and is currently under care.

Despite best efforts, details concerning the identity of the child's parents remain elusive, and the reasons for her abandonment are presently unknown. It is suspected to be the work of a non-wed young lovebird. However, nothing has been confirmed in this connection yet.

Shaheed Nagar police is heading the investigation, aiming to locate the baby girl’s parents as angry netizens demanded stringent action against the ‘monster’ parents.
