Poor state of the existing Jobra Anicut bridge
Demands for a new bridge connecting Cuttack City to Choudwar have gained momentum after locals voiced concerns regarding the alarming state of disrepair of the existing bridge on the Jobra Anicut Barrage over the Mahanadi River.
The 1.9 km bridge, which was thrown open to the public in 1990, is currently in a perilous state, with cracks having formed throughout the structure and the road allegedly due to administrative negligence.
The 25-year-old bridge on the Jobra Barrage has aged significantly, and its road surface has deteriorated, with large cracks appearing at multiple joints. Further, the sidewalls are in a deplorable state, with reinforcement rods now exposed.
“This bridge is extremely vital as it provides access to the SCB Medical College and Hospital. However, the cracks on it are concerning, as this bridge also serves as a lifeline for Cuttack-Jagatpur. It needs immediate repairs but a parallel new bridge is also required,” stated a Cuttack resident.
Despite being a crucial link for flood control and transportation, the bridge is burdened with continuous vehicular movement, except for heavy vehicles. However, due to inadequate maintenance, the risk of a major accident cannot be ruled out, leading to loud demands for immediate repairs and the construction of a new bridge.

Meanwhile, Cuttack Mayor Subhas Singh acknowledged the severity of the issue and stated the need for urgent repairs. “The government should look into an immediate repair of the bridge since it is affecting traffic and movement between Cuttack and Jagatpur,” he added.
Choudwar-Cuttack MLA Souvic Biswal stated that the matter has been raised in the state assembly and discussed with relevant department officials.
“The issue was raised in the Vidhan Sabha recently in the form of a question. We have also notified the Works Department of the need to repair the Jobra bridge,” said Biswal.

Along these lines, MP Bhartruhari Mahtab has emphasized that Cuttack and Choudwar’s infrastructure will see major changes, including the conversion of the defense airport into a civilian airport. He also added that the demand for a new bridge has also been formally proposed to the state government.
“I have brought the attention of the Minister of Central Aviation as well as PM Modi to the transformation of Charbatia Airport into a civilian airport. Accordingly, I have also submitted memorandums for the construction of a new bridge between Cuttack and Choudwar,” added Mahtab.

Completed in 1991, the Jobra Barrage is 1,928 meters long and features 95 gates, including sluice and spillway sections. It has played a crucial role in managing floodwaters and facilitating transportation. However, its current condition necessitates immediate intervention. The coming days will determine what steps authorities take to ensure its safety and longevity.
