'Mahendra', 66-year-old tusker that protected Similipal, passes away in Odisha
66-year-old tusker who took a bullet to protect Odisha's Similipal passed away in the Chahala region of the Similipal Tiger Reserve of Mayurbhanj district early this morning. The jumbo had been reportedly unwell for a long time and was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.
Despite their attempts to save the pachyderm, the tusker passed away during treatment, reports said. For years, Mahendra was a domesticated figure in the Similipal area, known for his gentle demeanour and significant presence. His passing marks the end of an era for local residents and animal lovers who admired him.
Despite persistent efforts from a team of veterinarians to treat Mahendra, his condition did not improve. "We did everything in our power to aid him," said a member of the veterinary team, expressing their sorrow at this loss.
Community members have expressed their condolences and shared memories of Mahendra's contribution to the region’s cultural fabric.
The huge mammal is known for assisting the Odisha Forest Department in combating poaching, timber smuggling and various other activities. The mighty guard- a trained bull elephant was once injured in a bullet attack by Maoists.
The eight-foot-tall Mahendra had received five gunshots and a few arrow injuries at the elephant camp at Gudgudia in 2012. However, it survived and continued with its noble work of protecting the Similipal Tiger Reserve.
Worth mentioning, it was also deployed at Satkosia Tiger Reserve to track the movement of tigress Sundari after it was brought to Odisha from the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh in June 2018.
The cherished elephant, Mahendra, who resided in the Similipal region, has passed away at the age of 66. Mahendra, who was much beloved by wildlife enthusiasts, had been under regular veterinary care due to prolonged illness.
Mahendra symbolised more than just a native elephant; he represented the delicate balance of the ecosystem within the Similipal National Park. His demise is a reminder of the importance of continued conservation efforts in India's wildlife sanctuaries.
As locals and conservationists mourn, there is a growing call for enhanced measures to protect and nurture the diverse wildlife within the region. Mahendra's life serves as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness between nature and community.
