A human rights activist on Wednesday moved the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking its intervention over the alleged loot and gang rape of a woman in her apartment in the Maitri Vihar area in Bhubaneswar.

Human rights Jayant Das moved the NHRC for the arrest of the culprits and ensure stringent actions against them.

“I have moved the NHRC in connection with the case. Maximum compensation of Rs 10 lakh could be provided to victims in case of gang rape. I also pray the court to ask the police to arrest the culprits immediately and submit the chargesheet within two months so that the hearing could be expedited,” said Jayant Das.

“I came to know that no CCTV cameras have been installed in the apartment. The role of the guards is also under scanner,” he added.

Notably, the woman was with her little daughter when the burglars barged into her apartment and committed the heinous crime.

The incident occurred at around 2 am on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday when the 27-year-old woman was asleep in her apartment along with her daughter. The burglars allegedly looted her gold earrings and mobile phone. After finding that no male member present in the house, the burglars allegedly held the woman at knife-point and gang-raped her in front of her daughter. They threatened to kill her daughter if she revealed it to anyone.

Based on the FIR lodged by the victim, Maitri Vihar Police has detained two burglars in this connection and they are currently being questioned at the police station.
