Man bitten by monocled cobra hiding in shoe

Sunil Panda, a resident of Chakeisihani in Bhubaneswar recently got bitten by a deadly monocled cobra while he was trying to wear his shoes. The snake was hiding inside one of the shoes and it bit Panda’s right hand the moment he picked up his shoe.

Other roommates, who then rushed to the spot after hearing the screams of Panda, put the shoe into a plastic bag with the cobra inside.

Following the incident, locals called Subhendu Mallik, General Secretary of Snake Helpline to rescue the snake. A volunteer of Snake Helpline rushed to the spot and rescued the 1-ft-long juvenile Monocled cobra from the spot.

As per sources, Panda was administered 10 vials of Anti Snake Venom (ASV) as the initial dose of treatment at Capital Hospital.

Right Way To Check Shoes Before Wearing Them

According to Subhendu Mallik, earlier there were incidents of snakebites during attempts by people to put on their shoes. It is the first stance of anyone getting bitten on the hand while trying to wear the shoes.

“People should now be very cautious while looking for any snake/scorpion hiding in shoes. The shoe should be picked up holding from the toe side and not be picked up by putting a finger in the heel side,” said Mallick.
