'Green Clean Mission': 3500 kg ganja seized, 80 persons arrested so far in Odisha

Green Clean Mission in Odisha

In a bid to thwart drug peddling and improve the quality of life, the Odisha government has undertaken a 'Green Clean Mission' to destroy and subsequently stop cannabis (ganja) cultivation in the state.

An enforcement team landed and destroyed ganja cultivation on more than 10 acres of land in Digapahandi area of Ganjam district today. Additionally, 62 acres of forest land in Subarnapur district have been cleared of cannabis cultivation.

The joint task force, which has been formed, comprises enforcers from the state police, excise department, and revenue department.

The drive comes after the state government set a target to completely eliminate cannabis cultivation by 2026. The task force will undertake several mission-driven operations such as the one that is currently underway.

Every day, acres of cannabis crops are being destroyed. Moreover, new technologies are being utilized in the campaign. Notable examples include taking the help of drones and satellites to identify cannabis cultivation locations and hotspots.

Statistically, cannabis cultivation is most prevalent in nine districts of the state, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Boudh, Ganjam, Nabarangpur and Mayurbhanj.

As part of the 'Green Clean Mission', DGP Y B Khurania provided updates on the progress. A total of 54 cases related to cannabis trafficking and cultivation have been registered so far.

Over 3,500 kilograms of cannabis have been seized, and 80 individuals have been arrested. Additionally, Rs 15 lakh cash and 20 vehicles used in the illegal trade have been confiscated.

The DGP said that the cops are vigilant with constant monitoring of cannabis-prone areas; and, all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the mission's success.
