Gajapati District has been named after Maharaja Sri Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deo, the Ex–Raja Sahib of Paralakhemundi estate (the 1st Prime Minister of Odisha State), who is remembered for his contribution in formation of a separate Odisha province and inclusion of Paralakhemundi estate in Odisha. This district has famous for the Buddhist temple, the highest in South Asia at Chandragiri. Tibetan refugees’ settlement at Chandragiri is another place for the tourist to visit.

Gajapati Additional District Collector Birendra Das collapsed and died while performing on stage in Paralakhemundi. The senior officer was rushed to MKCG Medical College, where he was declared dead. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep grief over the loss.
