A girl identified as Jyotirmayi Rana, who belonged to Lingapada village and was a student of Soro College in Balasore district, was allegedly murdered on Monday.
The accused youth, identified as Biswaranjan Puhan from Bhadrak district's Bhairavpur village under Basudevpur block, slit the girl’s throat due to unrequited love.
Jyotirmayi had previously sought help from the Soro Police by lodging an FIR about the suspect’s persistent threats and harassment related to marriage proposals. She was alone at home on the intervening day, when the attack took place.
“She (Jyotirmayi) was returning home at around 10.00 AM after taking bath and I was going to my shop at that time. I don’t know what happened thereafter. However, she was a nice person. Her mother works in a nearby school and usually leaves home at around 9.30 AM every day,” a relative of the girl, Ishwar Maharana said mediapersons.
“Family of the victim is telling that the incident is fallout of love affair. I have no knowledge of what happened,” Ishwar Maharana further said.
“He (Biswaranjan) was an acquaintance and used to visit our house at times. The two families visit each other’s place. Recently, one day, he insisted for marriage and I rejected his proposal,” mother of the girl, Tulasi Rana stated.
“Perhaps, irked with this and when no one else was present at home, he slit her (the girl’s) throat,” Tulasi Rana expressed.
On being informed, local police have launched a detailed investigation, which is underway. The suspect is currently absconding. Police have initiated a manhunt to nab him.
