As many as eight new products of Odisha have received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This was informed by the Odisha Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises department on its X handle on Wednesday.
This tag signifies that products from a specific geographical location possess qualities that are due to that origin. The prestigious tag is given by the Geographical Indication Registry of India.
Among the products that received GI tags are Odisha Khajuri Guda (Gajapati date palm jaggery), Dhenkanal Magji, Mayurbhanj Kai (a kind of ants) chutney, Nayagarh Kanteimundi Baigan(Brinjal) and Dongaria Kondh embroidered shawl.
The GI tag was also given to Kendrapara Rasabali (a kind of dessert), Koraput Kalajeera rice, and Paintings of Lanjia Saura.

Nayagarh Collector Rabindra Nath Sahu said that Nilamadhab Krushi Sagathan had applied for the GI registration on February 8, 2021, and the OUAT, Bhubaneswar, played a facilitator for the tag for Kanteimundi Brinjal. With the active support of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Nayagarh, we have got the GI tag certificate for the brinjal, he added.
On the other hand, artisans of Belaguntha in Ganjam have been demanding GI tag for the art of crafting flexible brass fish which is unique to their area. The hand-crafted brass fishes have a highly polished yet antique look.
