Raising doubts over the claims made on the health condition of arrested BJD MLA Prashant Jagdev, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday said that the ‘Bahubali’ legislator is faking illness to avoid jail custody.

Jagdev, who has been suspended from the party , is now undergoing treatment at the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar after he complained of health complications.

A delegation of BJP leaders led by the party’s SC Morcha president, Bibhu Tarai, today met the Director of Capital Hospital and submitted a memorandum.

Tarai alleged that Jagdev has been admitted to the hospital without any illness. “Prashant Jagdev is a habitual offender. To evade jail custody, he is exploiting the loopholes in law and is staying in hospital on medical grounds. Earlier, the Home Department did not arrest him and it is a conspiracy by the ruling party to help him evade jail custody through the Health department,” alleged Tarai.

Jagdev was accused of attacking BJP Balugaon Mandal chairman Niranjan Sethion September 8. The Chilika MLA had allegedly abused and slapped Sethi in full public view and a video of the incident reportedly went viral on social media.

The BJD leader had also allegedly snatched the mobile phone of a journalist present on the spot. Following the incident, the BJP leader had lodged a police complaint while another complaint was filed against Jagdev by the journalist at Balugaon police station.

The BJD legislator was suspended by party Supremo Naveen Patnaik following reports of his alleged ‘hooliganism’. Jagdev was arrested on October 8, 2021 and remanded to judicial custody after his bail petition was rejected by the court . Citing health reasons, Jagdev had managed to evade jail custody and is currently undergoing treatment at the Capital Hospital.

On the other hand, the Director of Capital Hospital, Dr. L.D. Sahu rubbished the allegations levelled by the BJP. “The Chilika MLA is undergoing treatment at the hospital as he is having difficulties in breathing. He is also suffering from high BP and diabetics. A team of doctors from medicine and cardiology departments are attending to him,” said Sahu.

Sahu further said treatment is being given to the MLA based on the combined opinion of the doctors. “Though BJP is alleging that outsiders are illegally meeting the MLA at the hospital, we have nothing to say as police personnel have been deployed to take care of such issues. However, action will be taken if any staff is found of any irregularities,” said Sahu.
