The Orissa High Court on Tuesday dismissed the anticipatory bail application filed by suspended BJD MLA Prashant Jagdev who has been booked in two cases of assault and intimidation by the Balugaon police.

While rejecting Jagdev’s bail plea, the High Court directed him to remain present in the lower court on Friday. The High Court has also issued a direction to the lower court to hear the anticipatory bail plea of the law maker on the day he applies for it.

Jagdev had been suspended by party Supremo Naveen Patnaik following reports of his alleged ‘hooliganism’.

On September 8, Chilika MLA Jagdev had allegedly abused and slapped BJP’s Balugaon Nagar Circle President Niranjan Sethi in full public glare. He had also allegedly snatched the mobile phone of a journalist present on the spot. Following the incident, the BJP leader had lodged a police complaint while another complaint was filed against him by the journalist at Balugaon police station.

BJD supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took prompt action against Jagdev and suspended him with immediate effect. The party chief also removed Jagdev from the post of Chairperson of Khordha District Planning Committee which he was holding for the last two years.

Following the incident, Opposition members had raised the issue in State Assembly disrupting the proceedings and demanded immediate arrest of Jagdev.
