Suspended BJD MLA Prashant Jagdev, who was sent to judicial custody following rejection of his bail plea by Khordha ADJ-1 court on Friday, has been shifted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Jagdev, who had allegedly attacked a BJP leader last month, was shifted to the hospital for treatment of his heart ailment.

Earlier on October 5, the Orissa High Court had rejected the anticipatory bail application filed by the BJD MLA, who has been booked in two cases of assault and intimidation by the Balugaon police. Later, the High Court had directed him to remain present in the lower court on Friday and had also directed the lower court to hear the bail plea of the accused on the same day.

As per the direction of the State’s top court, Jagdev appeared before the Khordha court and applied for bail. However, the lower court too did not entertain his plea. Following the rejection of the bail plea, Jagdev was sent to custody and later underwent a health examination before being sent to jail.

"The Court analysed the papers and evidence of both the parties and subsequently rejected Jagdev’s bail plea.  He has been booked under Sections 323 and 506 of IPC and 3 of SC/SC Act," said public prosecutor Rajanikant Patnaik.

Notably, Jagdev was accused of attacking BJP Balugaon Mandal chairman Niranjan Sethi on September 8. The Chilika MLA had allegedly abused and slapped Sethi in full public view.

The BJD leader had also allegedly snatched the mobile phone of a journalist present on the spot. Following the incident, the BJP leader had lodged a police complaint while another complaint was filed against Jagdev by the journalist at Balugaon police station.

The BJD legislator was also suspended by party Supremo Naveen Patnaik following reports of his alleged ‘hooliganism’.
