Every year the World Day for International Justice is celebrated for giving recognition to international justice and its system and making it stronger. The aim is to promote activities that support the fight for the rights of victims across the globe.
This day is also known as the Day of International Criminal Justice and signifies the importance of the fight against bringing justice to the victims of war crimes, genocide, or those who committed crimes against humanity.
The World Day for International Justice is celebrated every year on July 17 to mark the historic adoption of Roman law and also because, on the same day in 1998, a new system for international criminal justice was established.
Since then, this establishment has been looked upon as a historic moment that paved the way for establishing peace and one rule of law for everyone internationally.
Thus, the International Criminal Court (ICC) is the first, independent and permanent international judicial body that can try individuals accused of violating international human and humanitarian rights.
While ICC certainly is not a replacement for the national courts that offer justice in respective countries, it is available when a country is not interested or cannot carry out an investigation, or is unable to prosecute perpetrators for different reasons.
As of today, more than 139 countries have signed the treaty of ICC, and around 80 states representing different regions of the world have acknowledged it.
Every year various events are organised across the globe to celebrate this day and promote the work of ICC. The day is celebrated for highlighting the significance of ICC and how it works relentlessly to ensure that the victims receive the justice they deserve and the culprits are punished.
Since it was established, there have been repeated attempts from ICC to involve all the countries in its activities to offer justice against impunity so that the perpetrators who are wandering free are punished and further such occurrences are prevented.
