Govinda 'The Greatest Star'! When crowd ignored Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth for Hero No. 1
Bollywood's Hero No. 1 Govinda made his debut in 1986 and has worked in over 130 films throughout his illustrious career. Govinda set a unique identity in the industry as an action, comedy and romantic hero. He who set out on his journey as an action hero in the 80s, reinvented himself as comedy king in the 90s. He ruled the hearts of moviegoers as Hero No 1, Aunty No 1, Dulhe Raja, Raja Babu, Chote Miyan, and many more. But, do you know, the madness for Govinda was much more than legendary actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth at one time?
As Govinda turns 61 on December 21, here we bring an interesting anecdote about Chichi...
According to a BBC online poll in 1999, Govinda was voted as the 10th greatest star of stage/screen. He was ranked among the greatest stars of all time alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Alec Guinness, Laurence Olivier and many more. With his unique fashion sense, he turned heads. He also didn't shy away from experimenting with his looks and outfits. Even with his choice of funky accessories, he became a trendsetter. It won't be wrong to say that Govinda defined an era at one time.

Earlier, during an interview, Big B recalled the interesting incident when fans flocked to the sets of Hum, ignoring him and Rajinikanth.
The Kalki 2898 AD actor said, "I was shooting with Govinda for Hum when a group of young kids came up to me and one of the boys asked for an autograph. Govinda was standing next to me. There was a young, cute girl who gave him a slap and said, ‘Woh nahi, yeh. Govinda ka autograph lo.’”

Even though he had tough competition from actors like Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, Suniel Shetty, Ajay Devgn, etc, Govinda had carved a niche for himself in the industry.
However, by the mid-2000s, Govinda's career graph declined with a series of flops. Though he starred in multiple movies, except Bhagam Bhag, Partner, Life Partner, and Holiday, all other movies bombed at the box office. While reports have been abuzz that Govinda will reprise his role in Bhagam Bhag 2, the Swarg actor refuted the claims. On the work front, he will be next seen in Bayen Haath Ka Khel, Pinky Darling, and Len Den: It’s All About Business.
