Karan Johar
Karan Johar is a multi-faceted person and is one of the most discussed celebrities, producers, and directors in Bollywood. While he is credited for taking his father’s Dharma Productions to a new height, Johar is often accused of promoting nepotism and offering launch pad for star kids. Undeniably, though, he has given some very good films in his career spanning over two decades, including movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, My Name is Khan, Student of the Year, and many more.
When Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was released in 1998, it was a very big hit both because of a stellar lead pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol and also because of its fresh presentation of a love story. But more than 25 years later today, Karan feels that there are certain cringe moments in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and there were reasons why he wanted to make this movie a big hit.
During a recent interview, the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil director said, “I was 24 years old when I wrote Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. And I grew up. I am a producer’s son. I grew up understanding what box-office business is and how our country, you know, has a varied audience.”
“I just wanted to make a very big hit film because my father, you know, was a very loved man, but he was also a producer who had made a series of unsuccessful films. He had produced like five failures back to back. And we had seen some tough times,” Karan added. That is why he wanted to make a huge hit for his dad. So when he was making Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, contributing to society or making a difference to the society was not on his mind.
Karan Johar wanted to make a hit film for prestige and boost the morale of his father.
In the same interview, the Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani director discussed some cringeworthy moments in his first movie. Karan said he cannot recall why he did certain things, but since he was young and new to cinema, he was allowed to make mistakes.
However, veteran artist Shabana Azmi did call him after the release and asked him several questions including why suddenly Rahul (SRK) falls in love with Anjali (Kajol) after she grows hair because earlier when Anjali has short hair he does not like her and falls in love with Tina (Rani Mukerji) instead.
Also Shabana Azmi asked him about the pallu falling incident when Rahul realises his feelings for Anjali and whether that was a politically correct way of showing two people falling in love or not. Karan Johar accepted that Rahul was not a green flag but was a questionable flag. The famous director accepted that he was not thinking all that while making Kuch Kuch Hota Hai but his only thoughts were to make a blockbuster.
