Technical intelligence helps Odisha CB to nab accused involved in Rs 1 crore job fraud; accused had ‘forged passport’

When cyber criminals are adopting new tools to dupe victims, the Odisha Police is also upgrading itself to assist victims and track down such fraudsters.  In one such case, the Crime Branch has managed to nab an accused for duping several job aspirants to the tune of over Rs 1 crore by promising them highly paid jobs.

The accused has been identified as  Bishnu Prasad Pattanaik alias Biranchi Narayan Pattnaik. He used to lure his victims to provide high-paying jobs and demanded consultancy charges, bribes.

At a presser held in Cuttack, Crime Branch DG Vinaytosh Mishra on Friday informed that in 2018, the accused had duped a qualified aeronautical engineer from a college in Coimbatore to the tune of Rs. 90 Lakhs on the pretext of providing a job in British Airways and then Lufthansa airways. He even created fake offer letters and appointment letters.

Initially, a case was registered at the Gunupur police station, and later the Crime Branch took over the investigation.

In the second case, the accused had duped a woman’s son, who is a qualified engineer in Electronic and Instrumentation Engineering, to the tune of Rs 15 Lakh.

What Crime Branch Probe Revealed?

Senior Crime Branch officials informed that the accused used to introduce himself as a medical doctor, professor, or Engineer to the victims. The accused created forged letters of offer and appointment under the names of international consultancy companies like HR Maxons and Lufthansa Technik, the latter is a reputed German aviation company. He also forged documents like address proof and, driving license to conceal his identity and whereabouts.

Accused Fled To Cambodia

After committing the crimes, the accused fled to Cambodia and purportedly created a second passport to conceal his identity. A Look Out Circular was issued against Bishnu Prasad Pattnaik in 2019, which was requested to continue in 2020 also. To evade arrest, he has been staying in Cambodia since 2022 and claims to have started an IT Company there, which is under investigation.

More Shocking Details

The accused Bishnu Prasad Pattnaik is not only involved in cheating on the pretext of providing jobs not only in Rayagada district, but also in Visakhapatnam, Berhampur, Bhubaneswar, and other parts of the country.

He last came to Odisha in 2023 and his movements were kept under surveillance. The Crime Branch officials found that he came to India in the month of May, 2025, and based on Tech intelligence and surveillance, the officials arrested him after tracking his arrival.
