A Samiti member was allegedly shot dead near Jamujhara village at Baruan under Tumusingha police limits in Dhenkanallate last night. The deceased has been identified as Deepak Mahunta.

Though the exact motive behind the crime is yet to be ascertained, family members of the deceased have termed the incident as a political murder.

According to reports, locals found the body of the deceased in a pool of blood near his damaged car at Jamujhara village on Saturday morning. He was immediately rushed to Denkhanal District Headquarters Hospital. However, doctors declared him brought dead.

Deepak’s wife is currently the Sarpanch of Baruan Gram Panchayat. Deepak’s son DibyadarshanMahunta alleged that his father has been murdered over political and business enmity.

“I found our damaged vehicle near Jamujhara when I was returning from Dhenkanal in the morning. Initially, I thought that it was an accident. Later, I discovered that my father has been shot dead,” said Dibyadarshan.

“We are suspecting that my father has been murdered over political and business enmity,” said Dibyadarshan.

Kamakhyanagar police has started an investigation into the deathof the Samiti member.

“An investigation into the incident is underway. From the medical report, we came to know that the deceased has been shot. We could divulge further details after the next round of investigation,” said Kamakhyanagar SDPO Ranjan Kumar Dey.

Meanwhile, irate villagers have demanded a thorough probe into the case.

“We came to know about the death of our Samiti member in the morning. He was an honest man. We demand a thorough probe into the incident. The accused should be arrested immediately,” said Santanu Satpathy, a villager.
