Barely days after a prominent businessman Niranjan Goyal was allegedly robbed at gunpoint inside his apartment in the Badambadi Bikas Nagar area in Cuttack, the Commissionerate Police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked the case by arresting three persons, including the businessman’s driver, in connection with the crime.

According to reports, a group of miscreants forcefully entered the apartment and threatened Niranjan with a firearm before making off with Rs 5 lakh in cash.

On getting information, the police launched an investigation and, based on the gathered evidence, apprehended three suspects involved in the incident.

Authorities suspect that the crime was planned with the help of an insider, as the businessman’s driver is among those arrested. The involvement of someone close to the victim has raised concerns about security breaches within residential complexes.

After getting some clues from CCTV footage and or technical data, we interrogated the driver, who hails from Dhenkanal and he confessed to the crime along with two of his associates. The driver was aware of the cash movement and had conspired to loot the money after as he was aware that his employer usually brings cash home on Saturdays- Sundays.

“Two associates of the driver had also attacked the businessman and looted the cash. The driver tried to chase them in a bid to avoid suspicion. Along with the cash, there was a mobile phone and keys to the shop of the businessman. Earlier, we had seized a toy gun from the spot,” said Cuttack DCP.

The police are currently interrogating the accused to gather more details and determine if additional individuals were involved in orchestrating the robbery. Further investigations are underway to recover the stolen amount and ensure strict action against the culprits.

“After reaching the apartment, I got down from my vehicle and approached my house on the first floor. A miscreant came behind me. When I saw him, I stopped. Immediately, he beat me severely and snatched a bag containing cash of around Rs 5 lakh. He decamped with the cash bag on a motorcycle,” the victim told OTV on the day of the incident.
