The special squad of Odisha police arrested a gang rape accused from Nayagarh district who had been absconding for the past seven years.

Bhaskar Sahu had managed to flee from the clutches of police in December 2014 when he was brought to a court in Bhubaneswar for his appearance in connection with the case.

He has been arrested during operation 'Bring Back', a special drive launched by the State police to track down wanted absconders.

According to the police, Sahu had fled outside Odisha following his escape from the police and returned to his home recently due to the Covid-induced lockdown.

"He was involved in a gang rape case registered at a Mahila police station. He had escaped from judicial custody on December 9, 2014 and was at large since then. We conducted a raid at Odagaon in Nayagarh yesterday and arrested him," SP, special squad, Sanjeeb Satpathy said.

"After slipping from police custody he had fled to outside Odisha. However, he returned home during the lockdown. Acting on a tip-off, we raided his house and arrested him," he added.

Speaking about operation 'Bring Back', Satpathy said the Crime Branch has managed to nab two accused under the mission in the last couple of days. He added that a list of absconding criminals has been prepared and the operation will be intensified in coming days to nab them to face law.
