Jharsuguda: A woman was allegedly gang raped by two youths inside an abandoned room near the government bus stand under Government Railway Police (GRP) limits in Jharsuguda.

Although no complaint has been registered with police from any side, the matter came to light after a purported video clip containing the gang rape incident went viral on social media.

Taking suo motu cognizance, the Town Police has launched an investigation and arrested one of the accused, Jharsuguda SP Bikash Dash said.

“We have apprehended one of the accused and handed him over to the General Railway Police (GRP). I have also apprised the matter to GRP SP, Rourkela. The GRP has initiated a manhunt to nab another accused,” the SP added.

The survivor, who had remained untraceable since the incident, has been rescued. Every aspect of the case is being investigated, Dash pointed out.

Local intellectuals expressed serious concerns over the crime in the heart of the town.
“We condemned such a shameful incident. We demand immediate arrest of the accused, whoever they may be. The Odisha police and Railway Police should launch a joint investigation and nab the accused as soon as possible. Stringent action should be initiated against the perpetrators,” a social activist said.

The district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) also took the matter seriously.
“It is a shameful act. The CWC took suo motu cognizance of the case. We have taken the matter seriously. We have asked the railway police to investigate and arrest all those who were involved in the heinous crime,” said Anandini Padhi, chairperson CWC.
