Commissionerate Police on Thursday arrested one Sheikh Farid alias Kartik Jena in connection with the murder of a woman at Mahabir Basti near Ruchika Market in the Capital City of Bhubaneswar on September 3.

On September 7, the body of Sandhyarani was recovered by the Police from her rented house in the slums.

Sheikh Farid is a native of East Madinipur in West Bengal had shifted to Cuttack around 22-23 years ago. He worked as a ‘Raj Mistri’ (Chief Mason) in the initial years in Cuttack and married a local woman by changing his identity as Kartik Jena, informed  Bhubaneswar DCP, Umashankar Dash in a presser today.

Later, he started working in Bhubaneswar some years back and came in contact with the victim Sadhyarani Sethi, who was a widow and a mother of an eight-year-old boy. The duo, Kartik and Sadhyarani, later entered into a relationship and started living together, added Dash.

After Kartik’s (Farid) wife came to know about his extra-relationship with Sadhyarani, she opposed it leading to a series of family disturbances. In the meantime, Sandhyarani and Kartik also started quarrelling over the issue which worsened the situation for the latter.

Last month, Sandhyarani and Kartik shifted to a rented house at Mahabir Basti by identifying themselves as a married couple. “Kartik, who got fed up of the regular fights with Sadhyarani, strangulated her to death on the fateful day with a piece of cloth and fled to Kolkata after locking the house from outside,” stated the Bhubaneswar DCP.

A team from the Commissionerate Police went to Kolkata after getting a tip-off on his whereabouts in that city. However, he managed to escape and hid in a forest in Nayagarh district, said the DCP.

“He was later nabbed from Nayagarh by a team of Bharatpur Police. During interrogation, he admitted to have committed the crime,” said Dash.
