In a major drug haul, the special squad of the Commissionerate Police seized 1.12 kg of brown sugar worth Rs 1 crore and arrested three persons in this connection in Cuttack.

The drug peddlers were arrested from a mango orchard near Tinigharia area under Madhupatna police limits in Cuttack last evening, informed Twin City Police Commissioner Soumendra Priyadarshi today. 

“Yesterday, basing on some reliable information about trade of brown sugar by some persons in the mango orchard near Tinigharia area under Madhupatna police station, the special squad of Cuttack Urban Police district managed to detain three persons of Jagatsinghpur district involved in this and seized 1.12 kg of brown sugar from them,” Priyadarshi said.

The squad also seized a motor cycle used for this brown sugar trade, Rs 17,000 cash and four cellphones from the possession of the arrested persons, he said.

He said the accused are habitual traders in brown sugar. “They have been procuring the brown sugar from Balasore and supplying it in different districts like Puri, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack,” he said. 

The CP further stated that the special squad is investigating into further details about the main suppliers of the brown sugar and their transit route. He added, “We expect more things will come out in days to come.”

“This is another feather in the cap of Cuttack Urban Police in its endeavour against the organised crimes. During last couple of months, large number of illegal arms, huge quantity of brown sugar and so many other things have been seized by Cuttack Urban Police under the leadership of DCP Prateek Singh and his team,” the CP added.
