Bhubaneswar: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, a joint team of Quick Action Team (QAT) of Odisha Police and Mancheswar Police seized huge quantity of brown sugar worth over Rs 60 lakh in the Capital City on Monday.

Based on an intelligence input, the QAT team conducted the raid and nabbed two drug peddlers in this connection. Both of them were found to be residents of Jaleswar area in Balasore district. They were running the drug smuggling syndicate on the pretext of selling fish.

During search, brown sugar weighing 518 gram, a Bolero, two mobile phones, Rs 1900 in cash and other incriminating materials were seized from their possession.

 

“We will continue the crackdown on drug trafficking in the State. A case under Sections 21 (c) and 29 of NDPS Act, 1985 has been registered against both the accused. They will be produced in the court soon,” said Police Commissioner Soumendra Priyadarshi.

In a similar incident earlier this month,the Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Crime Branch had seized a huge amount of brown sugar weighing 1 kg 360 grams worth over Rs 1 crore in street from Sahadevkhunta area in Balasore district. As many as two drug peddlers had been nabbed in this connection.

This apart, the Commissionerate Police had seized around 445 gm brown sugar worth Rs 45 lakh and arrested one person in this connection near Kandarpur area in Cuttack on the same day.

It is worth mentioning that STF has seized more than 30 kg of brown sugar and over 64 quintals of (6400 kg) ganja since last year.
