Odisha on Wednesday recorded 8,778 infections, including 792 cases in the 0-18 years category, as per the State Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Department.

This is the biggest one-day spike in the last seven months. The State had breached 8000-mark on June 3 last year when it recorded 8,839 infections in a day. Notably on Tuesday 7,071 new cases were detected in the state.

Out of the total cases, 5,096 were detected in quarantine while 3,682 are local contact cases, said I&PR department.

As per the I & PR Department, Khordha district reported maximum 2,615 cases, followed by Sundergarh (1252), Cuttack (766) and Sambalpur (596), Mayurbhanj (338), Balasore (231), Puri (216), Bolangir (216), Jharsuguda (203), Jajpur (191), Koraput (161), Bargarh (136), Jagatsinghpur (114), Nabarangpur (112), Ganjam (106), Angul (101).

Other districts which reported less than 100 cases are as follows-- Keonjhar (95), Sonepur (87), Kalahandi (86), Nayagarh (75), Dhenkanal (78), Gajapati (72), Nuapada (67), Rayagada (65), Kendrapara (46), Deogarh (25), Kandhamal (20), Boudh (12), Malkangiri (12) and State Pool (575).

With this, the Covid-19 positive tally in the State has surged to 10,91,547 while a total of 10,47,783 people have recovered from the virus infection. The active cases have gone up to 35,242..

Odisha so far has tested 2,63,22,602 samples, including 74,611 in the last 24 hours, for Covid-19 while the test positivity rate stood 11.77 per cent.
