Kandhamal: A woman infected with Covid-19 gave birth to a healthy baby girl at Brahmanpad Community Health Centre under Chakapada block in the district on Sunday.

According to reports, the woman was admitted to the hospital after she complained of labour pain. Subsequently, she gave birth to the baby. Both the mother and baby are in healthy condition.

“The mother and baby are being treated in the isolation ward of the hospital. Considering the prevailing pandemic situation, both are given special care. The Covid test of the newborn will be done after some days,” stated Nishant Nayak, a doctor of the hospital.

“The baby is healthy and she weighs around 2.5 kg. She along with her mother will be discharged soon following the completion of their treatment,” said Nayak.

According to medical experts, pregnant women infected with Covid-19 during their third trimester are unlikely to pass the infection to their foetuses.

This study was conducted between April and June 2020 among women who came for treatment of Covid-19 or for delivery.

However, there is a high chance of the baby getting infected during childbirth.
