Bhubaneswar: An undertrial prisoner lodged at Jharpada jail succumbed to Covid-19 while undergoing treatment in Cuttack, DIGP, Prisons Subhakanta Mishra informed OTV on Sunday. 

The prisoner identified as Tripati Mohanty, a chronic patient of co-morbidities like diabetes and hypertension was admitted to Capital Hospital five days ago after being taken ill.

He was shifted to Bhubaneswar AIIMS the same day and his samples were put to Rapid Antigen Test thrice but they all came out to be negative. Later he was transferred to SCB where he was admitted to the Endocrinology ward of the medical college and hospital on Friday. 

He was again tested for Covid-19 and after his sample was found positive, he was moved to an isolation ward where he passed away on Saturday.

Tripati who was arrested in connection with peddling of narcotics under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act was also reportedly administered Covid vaccine some days ago, said the DIGP.

The senior police official also informed that a total of 120 prisoners have been administered vaccine in Jharpada jail. 

The BMC has been asked to carry out mass testing in the jail and they have informed that they will soon begin the process. Recently, some staff of the prison were tested positive for the virus but as of now no other prisoners have been found infected, said DIGP Mishra.
