Phulbani: Amid deaths and desolations, an octogenarian’s victory over Covid-19 in Kandhamal district has infused hopes in many who are still struggling to recover from the clutches of the fatal virus.

According to sources, Shyamghana Panda (83) of Ward No-2 in Baliguda had tested Covid-19 positive on May 8 and subsequently admitted to a Covid hospital in the locality.

After undergoing treatment for a week, Panda successfully defeated the virus and was discharged from the hospital yesterday, sources added.

He received a rousing welcome from the health workers and district administration for his remarkable victory against the virus.

“Shyamghana Panda of Baliguda, aged 83, has successfully defeated Covid-19 and was discharged from the Covid Care Centre, Baliguda today. His victory will surely inspire others to stay strong during this pandemic,” Kandhamal Collector tweeted.

Notably, the daily infection graph in Odisha continues soar even though the Covid-19 restrictions are in place. 

Odisha's active Covid cases continue to remain above 1 lakh due to a steady surge in fresh infections despite a healthy recovery rate. 

The single-day Covid tally in the State rose by 11,732 in last 24 hours, which pushed the cumulative positive count to 6,12224 while the total death toll climbed to 2,313 with 19 more fatalities reported during the period.

Kandhamal reported 84 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours taking the total positive tally to 7762. While 6849 persons recuperated from the diseases, the district has 876 active cases, Kandhamal Collector tweeted.
