Amitabh Bachchan’s stardom has sprawled across decades, making him the undisputed megastar of Indian cinema. On the other hand, Paresh Rawal has carved a niche for himself with his impeccable versatility and unmatched comic timing. Both actors, though from different generations, represent brilliance in their craft. Yet, in an interesting twist, Paresh Rawal, who is much junior to Bachchan, ended up replacing him in an iconic film.

Priyadarshan’s First Choice: Amitabh Bachchan
Director Priyadarshan recently revealed that his original pick for the role of Radhe Shyam Tiwari in the cult comedy Hungama (2003) was Amitabh Bachchan. The legendary star was envisioned to bring his commanding persona to the quirky, authoritative character that fuels much of the film’s humour. Unfortunately, Bachchan’s packed schedule made it impossible for him to commit to the project.
Paresh Rawal Steps In
With Bachchan unavailable, Priyadarshan turned to Paresh Rawal. The actor seized the opportunity and delivered a career-defining performance as Radhe Shyam Tiwari. His perfect comic timing, expressive delivery, and effortless screen presence made the character one of the most memorable in Bollywood comedy.
A Role That Became Legendary
Interestingly, many fans and critics believe that Rawal’s performance elevated the film in ways unimaginable. His lighter, more relatable energy gave Hungama a unique flavour, and today it’s nearly impossible to picture anyone else, no matter how iconic, in that role.

When Destiny Shapes Cinema
Priyadarshan himself admitted that while Bachchan in the role would have been fascinating, Rawal’s portrayal gave it a timeless charm. This instance highlights how fate often redirects cinematic choices, creating unexpected legends. For Rawal, replacing a megastar wasn’t just about filling shoes; it was about leaving behind an iconic legacy of his own.
