Amitabh Bachchan couldn’t join star-studded 'Deewangi' song in SRK's Om Shanti Om for Abhishek-Aishwarya!
Farah Khan’s 'Deewangi Deewangi' in Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om (2007) created Bollywood history by bringing 31 stars together in one celebratory track. From veterans like Rekha, Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Mithun Chakraborty to contemporary favourites such as Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty, the song became an iconic tribute to Hindi cinema. Yet, fans couldn’t help but notice the absence of one towering legend- Amitabh Bachchan. The megastar had to skip the shoot because of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai.
For choreographer-director Farah Khan, the song was nothing short of a dream project. She always wished to share the floor with her ’70s idols, and 'Deewangi' gave her that chance. She described the atmosphere on set as electric, with even the crew starstruck by the constant stream of celebrities. The entry of Mithun Chakraborty, she revealed, caused near-chaos as everyone rushed for selfies and autographs.
While the song united several generations of actors, Farah admitted that a few names were missing from her wish list. Along with Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Dev Anand were unable to participate. Big B’s absence was especially felt, but his family commitments during Abhishek and Aishwarya’s grand wedding made it unavoidable.
Though he wasn’t part of the song, Amitabh Bachchan did appear briefly in Om Shanti Om during the award ceremony sequence. Other stars like Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachchan too made cameo appearances in the film but not in the song.
Despite a few absentees, Deewangi Deewangi remains unmatched for its sheer scale and star power. As Farah Khan herself said, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where audiences got to see Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt dancing together in one frame- a spectacle Bollywood had never seen before.
