‘Necessity is the mother of all inventions’ and recently this was proven by an Odia girl Rishita Samantaray. A student of Class IX, Rishita was recently awarded by the central government for developing a device that ensures safer bus travel for pregnant women. She received the APJ Abdul Kalam Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology. Her inspiration came from witnessing her domestic help's daughter suffer multiple miscarriages due to bumpy bus rides.Rishita's innovative device, when installed at bus stops, allows pregnant women to scan their faces and enter the bus number. This information is then sent to the bus conductor, ensuring a seat and extra care for the expectant passenger. The technology promises to ease travel not only for pregnant women but also for senior citizens and physically challenged individuals. Rishita's mother is proud of her empathy and ingenuity and the idea which has potential to provide significant relief to many.
