The unemployed bamboo artisans are in danger

The demand for plastic items is increasing, and that of bamboo products is decreasing. In the past, whether it was a wedding or a religious ceremony, bamboo products were used for all auspicious occasions. Items made from bamboo, whether it's a traditional bamboo basket or a decorative piece, played an important role in rituals and celebrations. These items were also used for religious offerings during pujas and festivals. However, in today's plastic-dominated world, these traditional bamboo products are gradually being replaced.

In the village of Pratappur in the Basta block of Balasore, around 50 families make a living by crafting various items from bamboo. These artisans produce beautiful products using bamboo to support their families, as their livelihood is traditionally based on bamboo craftsmanship. In the past, these items were sold locally to sustain their households. However, now they are facing a crisis as plastic products have begun to replace bamboo crafts, threatening their employment and traditional way of life.

Due to decreasing demand and the inability to get fair prices, the sale of bamboo products has declined. The business has been severely impacted by plastic. With a wide variety of plastic household items available in the market, bamboo products are losing their value and respect. Slowly, bamboo products are becoming obsolete for people. The bamboo artisans, now facing a crisis, are blaming their fate for the decline of their craft.
