Assam government employees are now required to obtain government approval for a second marriage if their spouse is alive, regardless of their personal religious beliefs that might permit polygamy. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that even if their religion allows multiple marriages, state government permission is mandatory. He pointed out that disputes over a deceased employee's pension have arisen in cases where two surviving wives claim their rights. These guidelines were issued by the Assam government in an office memo dated October 20. The order states that no government servant with a living spouse can enter into another marriage without securing government approval, even if such subsequent marriages are allowed by personal laws.
