Since 2011, the National Voters’ Day is an annual reminder about the establishment of Election Commission of India on January 25th 1950. The primary objective of National Voters’ Day is to promote, facilitate, and maximize voter enrollment, particularly focusing on new voters. As this year we are heading towards the big general election; here is a list of all the rights enjoyed by voters of India. Right To Know: Voters’ have the right to know the detailed information of the candidates who are contesting in the election. As a voter, one can check the past records including, criminal records and financial position of the candidates. Postal Ballot: This is a right of voters to cast their ballots by mail rather than in person at a polling station. Though, it is not enjoyed by everyone, Members of the armed forces, paramilitary forces, electoral officers or those away from home constituency due to work, illness or disability can use these rights. Right To Not To Vote: If one finds that none of the candidates are worthy of their votes, they can opt for NOTA or None Of The Above option which means their vote goes to none of the contesting candidates. Tendered Vote: Incase a person found that a vote has already been cast in their name by mistake or misconduct, they can provide proof of their identity to vote. Every such person will cast his or her vote in a separate ballot paper. Voting Rights of Prisoners: As per the section 62(5) of Indian Constitution, no person shall vote in any election if he is confined in a prison, whether under a sentence of imprisonment or transportation or otherwise, or is in the lawful custody of police. Voting Rights for NRIs: This right was introduced in 2011 after amendment to Representation of People Act 1950. NRIs can now cast their vote in their place of residence as mentioned in the passport. They can cast their vote at their original polling station or also opt for postal ballot. Voting Rights of Specially-abled and Illiterates: Voters who are unable to cast vote at polling booth or through postal votes due to any ailment or illiteracy, can take assistance of an electoral officer who will record their vote.
