Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep Island has certainly become the cynosure of all social media users. So much has been the discussion among Indian citizens and celebrities that Lakshadweep not only topped the search on Google but was also on the top trends on social media platform X. The reaction was in response to the three deputy ministers of Maldives who criticised PM Modi for his post on 'X' following his visit to Lakshadweep, inferring that it was an attempt to project the Union Territory as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives. Taking strong note of this, the government of the Maldives suspended the three deputy ministers in the youth ministry, Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid. The disparaging remarks by the ministers have drawn flak in India, with many celebrities urging people to explore domestic tourist destinations instead of going to the Maldives. Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shraddha Kapoor, John Abraham, and cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina and many others took to their social media accounts to promote Indian islands. There were also some posts on social media claiming that many Indians are boycotting Maldives and cancelling their scheduled trip to the Maldives in view of the controversy that has erupted. In solidarity with India, EaseMyTrip has decided to suspend all Maldives flight bookings. On the other hand, the Maldivian foreign ministry said the government is aware of the derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and stated that the personal views do not represent its position. Following suspension of 3 ministers, the Maldivian envoy to India was summoned to the external affairs ministry and was conveyed strong concern over remarks posted on social media against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by a number of ministers of the Maldives.
