India has submitted three nominations for accreditation as International Wetland Cities. The three cities are Indore, Bhopal and Udaipur. The Wetland City Accreditation under the Ramsar Convention will help the cities gain international recognition for their efforts to protect natural or human-made wetlands. Note that wetlands generally refer to an area where water covers the soil or is present at or near the soil surface mostly throughout the year. As per the environment ministry, the nominations have been submitted based on the proposals received from states’ wetland authorities in collaboration with the municipal cooperation. Stating the importance of the wetlands around the nominated cities, the environment ministry said that they provide a plethora of benefits to its citizens in terms of flood regulation, livelihood opportunity and cultural values. It also mentions that Sirpur Wetland & Yashwant Sagar in Indore, Bhoj Wetland in Bhopal and several wetlands in and around Udaipur are lifelines to these cities. The Ramsar convention during COP12 of 2015 had approved voluntary Wetland City Tags to promote conservation and wise use of urban and peri-urban wetlands for the preservation of sustainable practices and local species population.
